제목: 사람은 무엇으로 사는가? (What men live by)

1.     시몬과 미하일의 만남

  구두장이(shoemaker) 시몬은 어느 농부집에 세 들어 살고 있었어요. 시몬(Semyon)은 구두를 만들 양피를 사러 갔다 오는 길에 그동안 구두를 수선해준 농부에게 외상값을 받으러 갔어요. 하지만 한 푼도 받지 못하자 홧김에 술을 마시고 얼큰하게 취한 채 집에 가던 길이었어요. 그런데 길 모퉁이 교회 앞에서 벌거벗은 채 길가에 쓰러져 있는 한 남자를 보았어요. 너그러운 시몬은 얼어 죽을 것이 분명한 남자를 지나치지 못하고, 자신의 외투를 입히고 집으로 같이 돌아갔어요. 시몬의 아내 마트료나(Matryona)는 그런 시몬에게 화가 나서 온갖 욕설을 퍼부었어요. 그러다 시몬이 '마트료나, 당신의 마음에는 하나님도 없소?"하는 말을 하자, 그녀는 마음이 누그러져 잠자리를 제공하고 입을 옷도 내주었어요. 하나님께 벌을 받고 있는 중이라는 그 남자의 이름은 미하일(Mikhail)이었어요.

2.     신사와의 만남

  시몬은 미하일에게 "자네가 우리와 같이 살려면 일을 해야 하네."라고 말했어요. 미하일은 "예. 어떤 일이든지 하겠습니다."라고 말하며 구두 수선일을 배웠답니다.  놀랍게도 초보자 미하일이 숙련된 시몬보다 더 일을 잘했어요. 머리가 영리해서 시범을 보이기만 했는데도 따라하는 것이었어요. 미하일의 소문이 퍼지자 시몬은 많은 돈을 벌게 되고 형편은 나아졌죠. 어느 날 신사 한 명이 비싼 가죽을 건내며 오만한 말투로 일년을 신어도 터지지 않는 구두를 만들어 달라고 명령했어요. 시몬이 비싼 가죽을 보면서 혹시 일이 잘못 되면 어쩌나 하고 망설이고 있을 때, 미하일은 그 주문을 받았어요. 그런데 미하일은 주문대로 구두를 만드는 것이 아니라 슬리퍼를 만들었어요. 시몬이 화가 나서 “왜 구두 대신 슬리퍼를 만들어?” 라며 따지려는데 신사의 하인이 들어왔어요. 주인 어른이 집에 가던 중 마차에서 죽었다며 장례식을 위해 슬리퍼를 만들어 달라고 했어요. 시몬은 그걸 알기라도 한 듯이 슬리퍼를 이미 만든 거예요.

3.     두 아이와의 만남

  세월이 흘러 6년의 시간이 흐르고 미하일은 변함없이 시몬의 가게에서 일을 했죠. 어느 날 한 부인이 쌍둥이 여자아이들의 구두를 주문했어요. 시몬이 부인에게 이 아이들은 어떤 아이냐고 묻자 여인이 대답했어요. “6년전 두 아이의 부모가 죽었어요. 아버지는 아이가 태어나기 전에 죽고 어머니는 아이를 낳다가 죽었답니다. 나는 이 아이들의 이웃에 살고 있었는데 태어난 지 8개월 된 아들이 있었지요. 그래서 임시로 그 두 아이들을 맡아 길렀답니다. 그런데 내 아들이 일찍 죽고 말았어요. 다행히 저의 방앗간 사업이 잘 되어 나는 이 아이들을 내 아이처럼 사랑하며 소중히 지금까지 키워오고 있답니다.” 이 말을 들은 마트료나는 "부모 없이는 살아도 하나님 없이는 살 수 없어요"라고 말했죠.

4.     천사 미하일

그 순간 방 안이 밝아지며 미하일이 천사로 변했어요. 그 모습을 본 시몬은 두려워 하며 물었어요. "자네가 우리 집에 왔을 때 세 번 웃었는데 왜 웃었는지, 하나님이 왜 자네에게 벌을 주셨는지 말해주게"라고 했어요. 미하일이 말했어요. “6년전 하나님이 한 영혼을 데려 오라고 명령하셔서 세상에 내려왔어요. 이제 태어난 쌍둥이 아이들이 죽게 될 거라는 명령을 가지고 아이 엄마에게 갔죠. 그런데 아이 엄마가 애원하자 저는 마음이 약해졌어요. 저는 그냥 하나님께 돌아갔고 명령을 지킬 수 없다고 했죠. 그러자 하나님은 저에게 "아기 엄마의 영혼을 데려오면, 세 가지 질문을 알 수 있을 거라 하셨어요.

‘사람의 마음속에는 무엇이 있는가? 사람에게 주어지지 않는 것은 무엇인가? 사람은 무엇으로 사는가?’ 하나님은 이 세가지의 질문의 뜻을 알게 될 것"이라고 하셨어요. 그러면서 답을 찾을 때 까지 사람들에게 가 있으라 명령하셨지요. 그래서 땅으로 내려온 저는 알몸뚱이로 차가운 길바닥에서 웅크리고 있었지요. 시몬, 당신이 죽어가던  나를 발견했지요. 시몬과 마트료나가 저를 대접하는 것을 보고, 사람의 마음 속에는 하나님의 사랑이 있음을 깨달았죠. 첫 번째 질문에 대한 답을 그때 얻게 된 거예요. 그리고 멋진 신사가 일년을 신어도 끄떡없는 구두를 주문했지만 그가 곧 죽을 것을 저는 이미 알고 있었죠. 그렇게 해서 사람에게 주어지지 않는 것이 무엇인지 두번째 질문에 대한 답을 알게 되었어요. 사람에게 주어지지 않는 것은 ‘자신에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지’를 알 수 없다는 것이었어요. 엄마를 잃은 아이들을 사랑으로 키우는 사람을 보고 ‘사람은 무엇으로 사는가?’라는 세 번째 질문의 답을 알게 되었어요. 사람은 사랑으로 산다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었지요.

모든 사람은 그들 자신의 행복을 위한 생각으로 살아가는 것 같지만, 실은 사람에게 존재하는 사랑때문에 사는 거예요. 비록 그들이 자신을 위한 걱정으로 사는 것처럼 보이지만, 실은 그들이 사랑에 의해서만 산다는 것을 이제 이해했어요. 사랑이 있는 사람은 하나님 안에 있고, 하나님은 그 사람 안에 있습니다. 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문이지요.

그 말을 마치고 미하일은 하늘로 돌아갔어요.

5.     자신의 아들을 화목제물(fellowship offering)로 드린 하나님의 사랑

  이 이야기는 러시아의 작가 레오 톨스토이(Leo Tolstoy)가 1884년에 쓴 “사람은 무엇으로 사는가?(What men live by?)”라는 제목의 소설입니다. 이 소설에서 사람은 무엇으로 산다구요? 사랑으로 삽니다. 요한 1서 4장 7-8절은 우리에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “사랑하는 여러분, 서로 사랑합시다. 사랑은 하나님에게서 난 것입니다. 사랑하는 사람은 다 하나님에게서 났고, 하나님을 압니다. 사랑하지 않는 사람은 하나님을 알지 못합니다. 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다.”

이 말씀은 분명하게 얘기해 주고 있어요. 사랑하는 사람만이 하나님의 사랑을 알 수 있다구요. 왜 사랑하는 사람만 하나님을 알 수 있습니까? 그것은 하나님이 사랑이시기 때문입니다. 하나님이 사랑이시기 때문에 사랑을 실천하는 사람은 하나님의 마음을 알게 되는 것입니다.

로마서 1장 20절 말씀은 이렇게 말합니다. “이 세상 창조 때로부터, 하나님의 보이지 않는 속성, 곧 그분의 영원하신 능력과 신성은, 사람이 그 지으신 만물을 보고서 깨닫게 되어 있습니다. 그러므로 사람들은 핑계를 댈 수가 없습니다.”

하나님은 눈에 보이지 않습니다. 혹시 하나님을 보신 분 있으신가요? 손 한 번 들어보세요. 하나님은 숨어 계신 분이예요. 하나님이 인간하고 숨바꼭질 놀이를 하고 계신 거예요. 하나님은 이 세상을 창조하시고 이 세상을 인간에게 맡기셨어요. 인간에게 자유를 무한대로 주시기 위해서 하나님은 자신이 창조하신 세상 속에 숨어 계시기로 한 거예요. 하나님의 성품이 창조물 안에 새겨져 있습니다. 세상은 그분의 성품대로 만들어졌기 때문입니다. 사람들은 이 세상 만물을 통해 하나님을 더듬어 찾을 수가 있습니다. 세상에 많은 고등종교(High Religions)들이 하나님은 이런 분이라고 더듬어 찾았는데 그 진리들이 거의 비슷합니다. 사람들이 찾아낸 보편적인 하나님에 대한 지식이 우리 기독교가 찾아낸 하나님의 대한 지식과 거의 같다는 이야기입니다. 그 보편적 지식이란 바로 사랑입니다. 세상의 많은 고등종교가 하나님을 인자와 사랑이 많은 분으로 이해했어요. 불교에서는 하나님이라는 말은 쓰지 않지만 우주의 궁극적인 진리가 자비라고 이해하고 있어요. 유교에서는 인간의 가장 기본적인 케릭터가 사랑인데 그것을 인(仁)이라고 불렀죠. 우주의 궁극적인 진리가 폭력이나 악이라고 이해하는 고등종교는 없습니다. 그 이유는 하나님의 가장 큰 성품인 사랑이 세상 속에 녹아 있기 때문이죠.

이 세상 모든 것이 사라져도 ‘사랑’은 없어지지 않는다고 고린도전서 13장 말씀에는 얘기해 줍니다. “사랑은 없어지지 않습니다. 그러나 예언도 사라지고, 방언도 그치고, 지식도 사라집니다.” 왜 사랑이 사라지지 않습니까? 사랑은 이 우주의 핵심 진리이기 때문입니다. 우주의 핵심 진리는 바로 하나님이시죠. 그러니까 하나님이 사랑이시고 하나님은 사라지시지 않기 때문에 사랑은 사라지지 않는 것입니다.

여러분 우리가 사랑하며 산다는 것은 하나님을 추구하며 산다는 뜻입니다. 사랑하는 자만이 하나님을 알 수 있습니다. 사랑하는 사람만이 하나님의 마음을 알 수 있습니다.

저는 우리 아이들이 지식이 많은 사람이 되는 것보다 사랑 많은 사람이 됐으면 좋겠습니다. 재산을 많이 소유하는 사람보다 사랑을 많이 소유한 자녀들로 자라주면 좋겠습니다. 세상의 모든 진리는 사랑 안에 녹아 있기 때문입니다.

요한은 하나님이 사랑이 무엇인지를 나타내기 위해 자신의 하나뿐인 아들을 이 땅에 보내시어 우리 죄를 위하여 화목제물이 되게 하셨다고 말합니다. 그는 이것보다 더 큰 사랑은 없다고 말하고 있죠. 화목제사가 어떤 제사길래 하나님의 사랑이 그 안에 숨겨져 있는 것일까요? 사람들이 감사나 서원할 제목이 있으면 소나 양같은 짐승을 잡아 제사장에게 갑니다. 그러면 제사장은 짐승의 일부만 태워서 하나님께 드리고 나서 나머지 고기를 제물을 바친 사람에게 줍니다. 그러면 그 사람은 동네 사람들과 고기를 나눠 먹어야 했습니다. 화목제로 드린 소나 양의 고기는 그날 다 먹어 치워야 하는 게 법이었어요. 소 한 마리를 한 가정이 하루에 다 먹어치우는 게 가능할까요? 절대 불가능합니다. 이걸 하루에 다 먹으려면 이웃 사람들을 초청해야만 가능합니다. 그래서 화목제 제사가 드려지는 날에는 동네 잔치가 벌여지는 것입니다.  화목제는 자기 이웃들을 초청하여 제사를 드린 고기를 서로 나눠 먹는 제사방법입니다. 이웃들과 고기를 먹고 나눔으로 화목한 관계를 유지하라는 목적이 화목제의 첫째 목적입니다. 화목제의 다른 목적은 가난하고 소외된 이웃들, 먹고 살기 힘든 이웃들이 화목제를 통해 고기맛을 보기를 원하시는 가난한 자들을 향한 하나님의 자비가 의도된 제사방법이었어요.

그렇다면 하나님이 자신의 아들을 화목제물로 드린 것 안에 하나님의 사랑이 담겨있다는 뜻이 무엇일까요? 예수 그리스도가 십자가에서 희생당하신 것은 사람과 하나님을 화목하게 할 뿐아니라 사람들끼리도 화목하게 하기 위한 목적이었어요. 많은 사람들이 예수님처럼 자신의 것을 나누는 삶의 태도로 살아간다면 화목한 세상이 만들어질 것을 하나님은 아신 거예요. 나만 잘 먹고 잘 사는 인생이 아니라 함께 나누며 살아가는 세상이 바로 하나님이 바라시는 세상이라는 겁니다. 죄가 없으신 예수님이 다른 사람의 죄를 지신 것처럼 나도 남의 짐을 대신 지는 삶의 태도로 살아가는 삶을 주님은 원하세요. 저 사람이 나에게 해준 것이 하나도 없더라도 나에게 소중한 고기를 나눠주는 따뜻한 마음이예요. 내 것을 나누고 불쌍한 사람들을 돕는 이 따뜻한 사랑은 하나님이 우리 인간에게 주신 마지막 남은 희망이 될 것입니다.

사람은 무엇으로 사나요? 이 질문의 정답은 바로 사랑입니다. 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 우리들로 인해 세상이 하나님을 알아가면 좋겠습니다. 사랑하는 친구들이여 우리가 서로 사랑합시다. 왜냐면 사랑은 하나님께로부터 온 것이기 때문입니다. 하나님처럼 자신의 가장 귀한 것들을 이웃들과 나누는 그런 아름다운 어린이들이 되시길 축복합니다. 시몬처럼 마트료나처럼 다른 사람을 위해 나의 공간을 내어줄 줄 아는 그런 사랑의 사람들이 되시길 예수님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

1.     Meeting of Semyon and Mikhail

Semyon the shoemaker lived in a farmer’s house whom he rented a room from. He

went to the store to buy sheepskin, and on the way home, went to collect money from

the farmer, whom he often repaired shoes for. But Semyon did not receive even a penny

from the farmer, and became drunk and filled with rage. On his way home, he saw a

naked man lying on the corner of the street, in front of the church, freezing. Generous

Semyon could not pass a man who was freezing to death, so he put his coat on him and

took him to his home. Semyon’s wife Matryona became angry and cursed at him. But

Semyon replied, “Matryona, is there no God in your heart?” She relented and offered

the freezing man a bed and clothes. The name of the freezing man was Mikhail, and he

was being punished by God outside the church.

2. Encounter with the Gentleman

Semyon said to Mikhail, "You have to work if you want to live with us." Mikhail said,

"Yes, I'll do anything,” and learned to mend shoes. Surprisingly, the beginner Mikhail

was a better worker than the skillful Semyon. Mikhail was smart, and was able to copy

Semyon’s techniques even from basic demonstrations. The rumor spread of Mikhail’s

talent, and Semyon was able to make a lot of money and improve his living situation.

One day, a gentleman ordered him to make shoes that would not burst even after a year

of wearing them. While Semyon was looking at the expensive leather and wondering

what would happen if he messed up, Mikhail began working on that order. But Mikhail

messed up the order and made sandals instead of shoes. Semyon angrily asked him,

“Why did you make sandals instead of shoes?” While he was yelling the gentleman’s

servant came in, saying that the gentleman had died in his carriage on the way home,

and to make sandals instead of shoes.

3. Meeting with two children

Six years passed, and Mikhail continued to work at Semyon's shop. One day a woman

ordered shoes for her twin girls. Semyon When I asked what kind of children they were,

the woman answered. “Six years ago, the parents of the children died. The father died

before the children were born and the mother died while giving birth. I was their

neighbor and had an 8 month old son of my own, so I adopted these children.

Unfortunately, my son died early, but my mill business grew successful, and I was able

to love and cherish these girls as if they were my own. Upon hearing this, Matryona

said, “Even if you can live without parents, you can’t live without God.”

4. Angel Mikhail

At that moment, the room lit up and Mikhail became an angel. Seeing this, Semyon

asked in fear, “You laughed three times when you came to my house, why did you

laugh?

Tell me why God punished you.” Mikhail said, “Six years ago God commanded me to

bring a soul to him. I went to the mother of the child who I was supposed to bring to

Him. But she begged me not to take him, and my heart weakened. I returned to God

saying that I couldn’t keep his command. God told me, ‘If you bring the child’s mother

instead, you will know 3 questions.’”

‘What is in a person’s heart? What is not given to people? What do people live for? You

will know the meaning behind these questions.” God said. Until then, Mikhail was told to

live among the people. “That is why he was curled up naked on the cold street,” he said.

“Semyon, you found me while I was dying. Under Matryona’s and your hospitality, I

learned that inside people is God’s love. That’s when I got my first question answered.

Next, a nice gentleman ordered a pair of shoes that could last a year but I knew he was

going to die soon. And so I knew the answer to the second question of what is not given

to man. What is not given to people is that they themselves do not know what they

need. The third answer of ‘what do people live for’ was answered by the mother who

lost her son. People live to love.

Everyone seems to live with thoughts of their own happiness, but in reality people live

because of the love that exists. Despite people seeming to live as if worrying about

themselves, they are in fact living out of love. People that love are living within God, and

God is living within them, because God is love.

With that, Mikhail returned to the heavens.

5. God's love for us by giving his Son as a fellowship offering

This story is based on the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who wrote the novel “what men

live by” in 1884. What do people live by? Love. 1 John 4:7-8 says, “Dear friends, let us

love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God

and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

These verses tell us clearly. Only those who love can know God’s love. Why is this?

Because God is love. So only those who practice love can seek God’s heart and find it.

Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his

eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what

has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

God is invisible. Has anyone ever seen God? God is hidden. God plays hide and seek

with humans. God created this world and entrusted it to man. He chose to hide in a

world he created with his own hands, in order to give complete and unrestricted

freedom to humans. God’s character is engraved into creation because he created it.

People cannot find God through only things in this world. But many high religions look

for a God and find almost identical beings. The universal being is based around love.

Many of the world’s higher religions believe that God is loving and merciful. For

example, Buddhism does not use the word God, but the ultimate truth is mercy. In

Confucianism, the most basic human character is love, but it is called benevolence.

There is no higher religion in which the ultimate truth is violence or evil. That is because

the greatest part of God is love, and it is embedded into his creation, the world.

1 Corinthians 13 says that even if everything in this world disappears, “love” does not

disappear. “Love never fades. But the prophecies are gone, the tongues have ceased,

Knowledge also disappears.” Why doesn't love go away? Love is the substantial truth of the

universe. The substantial truth of the universe is God. So God is love. Love never fades

because God never fades away. When people live in love, it means we live in the

pursuit of God. Only those who love can know God. Only those who love can know

God’s heart. I would rather have my children turning out to be loving people than

successful and knowledgeable people. All the ultimate truths in the world are within

love.

John said that God sent his one and only son to the earth to show his love for us, as a

sacrifice for the fellowship offering for our sins. There is no greater love than this. What

is a fellowship offering? Is it because the sacrifice has God’s love hidden within? People

used to make sacrifices by slaughtering an animal so that the priest could burn part of

the animal and offer it to God. The rest of the animal (the meat) was given back to the

people so that they could share with their neighbors. It was a law to eat all the meat that

was offered as a fellowship offering that day. Was it possible for one family to eat a

whole cow in one day? No. That’s why they shared it with their neighbors. So on the day

of the fellowship offering, a neighborhood feast is held. The person who held the fellowship

offering invites his neighbors, sharing the meat and joy. The main purpose of the fellowship

offering is to maintain a harmonious relationship with the neighbors. Another purpose is

to pray and let the poor and underprivileged neighbors - those who struggled to make

ends meet - can taste the meat through the offering. The fellowship offering was a sacrifice

method intended to show God’s mercy toward the poor.

What does it mean that God sent his son as a fellowsip offering? It means that the

sacrifice of Jesus Christ was a peace offering for many people. God knew that if people

lived their life like Jesus with an attitude of willingness and sharing with others then it

would become a harmonious world. God wants a world where not just I eat well and live

well, but where we share our successes and fortunes. Just as the sinless Jesus bore

the sins of others, I also live with the attitude of bearing the burdens of others. Even if

my neighbors have done nothing for me, I will treat them as if they have shared the

meat of their offering with me. God’s final hope that he has given to us is that we will

treat and share with others, even the unfortunate, our love and fortunes.

What do people live for? The answer is love. I hope the world will get to know God

through our actions, as we love God and also love our neighbors. Loving Friends, let us

love each other. Because love first came from God. God wishes for us to share our

success and fortunes with those around us. Like Semyon and Matryona, I hope we

become sharing, caring, and loving people.

여러분의 인생에 목표가 있으세요? 어린이들에게 물어보겠습니다. 어린이 여러분은 인생의 목표가 있나요? 여러분은 어떤 사람이 되고 싶나요? 질문이 어려운 것 같으니까 쉬운 질문을 드려볼게요. 여러분 모두 열심히 공부하고 있죠?  왜 공부하세요? 무엇때문에 열심히 공부하고 열심히 책 보세요? 많은 사람들이 좋은 대학에 가려고 공부를 합니다. 그러면 좋은 대학은 왜 가야하나요? 좋은 대학에 가야 좋은 직업을 가질 수 있다구요? 그렇다면 좋은 직업을 가지면 뭐가 좋나요? 좋은 직업을 가지면 돈을 많이 벌 가능성이 높습니다. 사람들이 말하는 좋은 직업이란 돈을 많이 버는 직업이니까요. 그럼 돈을 많이 벌면 뭐가 좋나요? 내가 원하는 것을 마음껏 살 수 있다구요? “목사님 저는 멋진 자동차를 타고 싶어요. 돈만 있으면 멋진 집도 사고, 제가 원하는 뭐든지 다 살 수 있다구요.” 자 그렇다면 여러분의 인생의 목표는 1등이 되는 것이고, 돈 많이 버는 사람이 되는 것이라고 할 수 있을까요? 공부를 잘 하고 1등이 되면 물론 좋은 것들이 많습니다. 무엇보다 여러분의 부모님이 여러분을 자랑스러워할 테니까요. 목사님 친구가 스텐포드 대학교 후디를 선물해 주었어요. 스텐포드 대학교 후디를 입었더니 어떤 사람이 저에게 그러더군요. “당신 부모님은 분명히 당신을 자랑스러워 할거예요.”

이제 부모님들에게 묻겠습니다. 여러분은 여러분의 자녀에 대한 목표가 있으신가요? 이 아이가 어떤 아이가 되었으면 좋으시겠어요? 많은 부모들의 자녀들을 향한 소원은 비슷합니다. 우리 아이가 top이 되었으면 좋겠어요. 우리 아이가 큰 사람이 되어서 세상에서 영향력이 있는 사람이 되면 좋겠어요라고 생각하실 겁니다. 많은 사람들의 아이들의 삶을 향한 목표는 높은 지위와 풍부한 재력을 통해 영향력 있는 사람이 되는 것일 겁니다.  아이들과 상관 없이 성인 여러분은 인생의 의미를 찾으셨고 목적을 발견하셨나요?경쟁에서 살아남고 남보다 높은 위치에 앉는 것이 의미 있는 삶은 아닌 거 같기도 한데, 그렇다고 그걸 놓치고 싶지도 않은 것이 우리들의 솔직한 마음입니다.

세베대의 부인에게는 아들 둘이 있었어요. 그녀는 아들 야고보와 요한이 큰 사람이 되길 바랐습니다. 야고보와 요한의 엄마는 아들들이 가장 높은 지위를 갖길 바랐죠. 그런데 한 가지 마음에 걸리는 게 있었죠. 자기 아들들이 좋은 대학을 나오지 못했다는 것이었어요. 야고보와 요한은 갈릴리 호수에서 물고기를 잡는 어부였기 때문입니다. 엄마는 예수님이 갈릴리 근처에서 3년 동안의 사역을 마치고 예루살렘에 들어가신다는 소문을 들었습니다. 예수님이 이제 왕이 되시기 위해 예루살렘으로 가시는구나 라고 생각했죠. 엄마는 큰 맘 먹고 예수님을 찾아가서 직접 부탁해 보기로 했습니다. 무엇을 부탁했을까요? 예수님의 나라에서 예수님이 왕이 되면 야고보와 요한에게 가장 높은 벼슬(position)을 달라는 것이었죠. 이것은 엄연한 반칙이었죠. 나머지 10명의 제자들은 너무나 화가 났어요. “누구는 엄마가 없어서 안 부른 줄 알아?”, “너희 정말 못됐구나. 그렇게 살고 싶냐?”, “야이 삐리리야~” 이제 욕까지 오고 가며 서로 싸움이 일어났죠.

이 상황에서 예수님이 나서십니다. “워워워~.” 예수님은 제자들에게 중요한 사실을 얘기해 주고 싶었죠. 예수님이 예루살렘에 가는 목적을 제자들이 모르는 것 같았기 때문이죠. 예수님이 예루살렘에 가시는 목적이 무엇인 것 같나요? 목사님이 두 개의 보기를 드릴테니 맞춰보세요.

1번) 예수님은 1등이 되어 가장 높은 자리에 앉기 위해 예루살렘에 가신다.

2번) 예수님은 꼴찌가 되어 다른 사람들의 종이 되기 위해 예루살렘으로 가신다.

정답은? 2번입니다. 이것은 예수님의 인생의 목적이자 의미이기도 했습니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 목적이었죠.

자 부모님 여러분. 여러분에게 물어보겠습니다. 여러분 자녀의 인생의 목적이 다른 사람보다 뒤쳐져서 다른 사람을 섬기는 servant가 되는 것이라면 여러분의 기분이 어떠시겠어요? 그런데 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “누구든지 너희 중에 큰 사람(Mega)이 되고자 하는 자는 헬퍼(diaconos)가 되어야 한다. 누구든지 너희 중에 1등(protos)이 되고 싶으면 종(dulos)이 되어야 한다.” 여러분의 자녀가 헬퍼가 되고, 또한 그들이 servant가 되어서 다른 사람을 돕기만 하는 사람이 되면 좋으시겠습니까? “네 좋겠습니다.” 이렇게 말해야 하는데, 그렇게 말하면 뭔가 손해 본 것 같은 느낌이 드는 게 사실입니다. 그래도 우리 아이가 꼬리보다 머리가 되는 게 좋아 보이니까요.

사람은 의미를 먹고 사는 존재입니다. 의미가 없는 일을 하는 것 만큼 사람을 힘 빠지게 만드는 것도 없습니다. 어떤 힘있는 사람이 여러분에게 삽을 주면서 웅덩이를 파라고 했다고 합시다. 그런데 웅덩이를 2 피트까지 팠더니 다시 그 웅덩이를 메꾸라 한다면 기분이 어떠시겠어요? 기운 빠지겠죠? “지금 뭐하자는 거야?” 왜 이런 생각이 듭니까? 웅덩이를 팠다 메우는 일은 아무 의미도 없어 보이기 때문입니다. 어린이 여러분이 정말 열심히 공부해서 1등했습니다. 그리고 좋은 대학에 갔습니다. 그리고 좋은 직장을 얻었어요. 그런데 인생의 의미를 못 찾는다면 그것만큼 불쌍한 삶이 있을까요? 꼴찌를 하더라도 살아가는 의미를 깨닫는다면 그것만큼 값진 인생도 없을 거예요. 꼴찌하라는 말이 아니라 의미 있는 삶을 살아가는 것이 중요하다는 거예요

그렇다면 사람들은 어떤 때 의미를 느끼는 것일까요? 우리는 다른 사람을 도와주고 다른 사람을 섬길 때 인생의 의미를 발견하도록 만들어져 있습니다. 자기를 위해 하는 일들에는 기쁨이 있을 수는 있겠지만 만족과 보람을 찾기는 힘듭니다. 사람은 하나님의 형상으로 만들어진 존재입니다. 그렇기 때문에 다른 사람과 연결될 때 인생의 의미를 찾게 만들어져 있어요. 하나님은 관계적인 분이시기 때문이죠. 큰 사람이 되려면 헬퍼가 되고, 1등이 되고 싶으면 종이 되란 말은 이런 뜻입니다. 다른 사람의 아픔에 공감할 줄 아는 사람이 가장 큰 사람이라는 뜻이죠. 달리기 시합을 하는데 다른 친구가 넘어졌다고 합시다. 진짜 일등인 친구는 결승선에 맨 먼저 통과한 사람이 아닙니다. 넘어진 친구를 일으켜 주고 그 친구와 같이 꼴찌로 들어온 친구입니다. 공감하고 함께 아파해주는 친구가 가장 큰 친구인 겁니다. 다른 이들을 섬기고 도와주는 인생이 의미있는 인생이고 큰 사람이 되는 길이라는 걸 마음에 새겨야 합니다.

옛날에 옛날에 호랑이 담배 피던 시절에 호랑애벌레 한 마리가 살고 있었어요. 이 애벌레는 나뭇잎을 갉아먹으며 행복하게 살고 있었답니다. 그런데 애벌레는 문득 먹고 자라는 것만이 삶의 전부는 아닐거라는 생각이 들었어요. 호랑애벌레는 먹고 자라는 것만 하기에 인생이 너무나 따분했어요. 그래서 나무 밑을 내려 왔죠. 그리고 애벌레는 이상한 기둥을 하나 발견했답니다. 그 기둥은 꿈뜰거리고 있었어요. 가까이 가서 자세히 보니 그것은 애벌레들로 만들어진 애벌레 더미였고 애벌레 기둥이었어요. 그 기둥의 애벌레들마다 꼭대기에 올라가려고 기를 쓰고 있었어요. 하지만 꼭대기는 구름에 가려져 보이질 않았어요. 애벌레는 저 위에 뭐가 있는지 모르지만 다른 애벌레들이 모두 다 올라가기 때문에 따라서 올라가기로 했어요. 그런데 그 기둥을 타고 올라가는 삶은 생각보다 쉽지 않았어요. 다른 애벌레들을 밟고 올라가야 했기 때문이죠. 밟고 올라가느냐 아니면 밟혀서 떨어지느냐 였어요. 애벌레들은 친구가 아니라 서로가 위협이자 장애물일 뿐이었어요.

이 이야기는 “꽃들에게 희망을(Hope for the flowers)”라는 책의 내용이예요. 이 애벌레는 기둥의 꼭대기에 올라갔을까요 못 올라갔을까요? 맞아요 결국에 꼭대기까지 올라갔어요. 그런데 그 꼭대기에는 무엇이 있었을까요? 아무것도 없었어요. 그 꼭대기에서 호랑애벌레는 다른 애벌레들이 하는 이야기를 들었어요.

“이곳에는 아무것도 없잖아.”

“조용해 이 바보야. 다른 애들이 듣겠어. 우리는 저들이 올라오고 싶어하는 곳에 있단말이야. 여기가 바로 거기야.”
“저기 좀 봐 저기에도 기둥이 또 있어. 사방이 온통 기둥이야.”

호랑애벌레는 화가 났어요. ‘그동안 고생해서 올라온 기둥이 수 많은 기둥 중에 하나라니…’ 호랑애벌레는 탑이 되었고, 다른 사람보다 앞서 나갔지만 결국 어떤 의미도 발견하지 못했던 거예요.

호랑애벌레는 어떻게 됐을까요? 호랑애벌레는 자신을 아껴주고 사랑해준 노랑애벌레가 나비로 변한 모습을 발견하고 기둥을 내려가기로 마음먹었죠. 결국 노랑나비의 도움으로 호랑애벌레는 번대기에 들어가게 되었죠. 그리고 나비가 되어 인생의 의미를 발견하게 되었답니다. 책에서 노랑 애벌레와 번데기에 들어가는 늙은 애벌레가 대화를 나누는데, 거기서 나비가 되는 것을 이렇게 설명해 주고 있어요.

“나비는 미래의 애벌레 니 모습이란다. 나비는 아름다운 날개로 날아다니면서 땅과 하늘을 연결시켜주지. 나비는 꽃에서 꿀만 마시고 이 꽃에서 저 꽃으로 사랑의 씨앗을 날라준단다. 나비가 없으면 꽃들도 이 세상에서 곧 사라지게 돼!!” 나비는 꽃들에게 희망을 날라다주는 존재였던 겁니다.

다른 이들을 섬기고 다른 이들의 종이 될 때 우리는 인생의 의미를 깨닫게 됩니다. 이 말이 불편하게 들리는 분들도 있을 겁니다. 다른 사람보다 앞서 나가고 높은 곳에 있으면 솔직히 좋은 것들이 많아 보이기 때문입니다. 우리는 자꾸 다른 사람들을 곁눈질 하며 비교하는 경향이 있죠. 다른 사람과 똑같아 지지 않으면 불안해 합니다. 다른 사람들이 하는 것을 나도 안 하면 자꾸 뒤쳐진 것 같은 느낌이 들죠. 그러면서도 다른 사람들과는 다른 삶을 살고 싶어하죠. 다른 사람보다 좋은 물건을 쇼핑하고 싶어 합니다. 다른 사람보다 좋은 대학에 가고 싶어하구요. 왜냐면 다른 사람들은 못 가진 것을 내가 갖고 있으면 내가 더 특별해 보이기 때문입니다. 그런데 다른 사람과 비교하는 인생은 정말 어리석은 인생이랍니다. 비교하지 말고 여러분의 삶을 사세요. 다른 사람이 좀 앞서가더라도 그냥 보내주세요. 사람들마다 다 인생의 속도가 다른 거예요. 책을 좋아하게 태어난 친구가 있고, 책은 싫지만 운동하는 것을 좋아하게 태어난 친구도 있어요. 사람들은 다 다르기 때문에 비교할 필요가 없는 거예요.

인생의 참 의미와 행복은 다른 이들과 비교를 통해 얻어지는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 다른 이들과 연결되고 손잡을 때 얻게 되죠. 우리의 도움을 받은 이들의 웃음을 보며 우리는 큰 보람을 얻게 되고 인생의 의미를 찾게 된답니다.

호랑애벌레는 나비로 새롭게 태어나면서 자신의 인생의 의미를 새롭게 깨달았죠. 애벌레는 번데기로 들어가 죽어야만 새롭게 태어남을 알았어요. 우리도 예수 그리스도를 믿고 옛 사람이 죽지 않으면 결코 새사람으로 거듭날 수 없답니다. 예수님과 함께 십자가에서 죽고 예수님과 함께 다시 태어나지 않으면 우리는 세상 사람들과 똑같은 목표로 살아갈 수 밖에 없어요. 하지만 하나님의 자녀로 거듭난 사람들은 세상을 바라보는 관점이 달라지죠. 비교하지 않아도 자유롭게 살 수 있게 되고 꼴찌가 되어도 행복한 법을 알게 된답니다. 예수님은 세상의 꼴찌들이 지고 가는 십자가를 지시면서도 행복해 하셨어요. 왜냐면 이 십자가를 통해 많은 사람들이 참 자유를 얻을 것을 알았기 때문이죠. 그리고 우리에게도 다른 사람들을 자유케하는 삶을 살라고 부탁하신답니다.

세상 모든 사람들은 꽃이 될 수 있어요. 누군가가 그에게 다가가 이름을 불러주고 손 잡아줄 때 그 사람은 꽃이 된답니다. 여러분은 그 꽃들의 삶에 의미를 실어 날라주는 나비로 부름 받았습니다. 아직 예수님을 알지 못하는 사람들은 자기가 어디로 가는지도 모르고 무작정 다른 사람들을 짓밟고 앞서 가려고만 하죠. 우리가 애벌레에서 새롭게 태어난 나비처럼 그들의 삶을 하나님과 연결시켜 준다면 그들도 우리처럼 삶의 목적과 의미를 찾을 수 있을 거예요. 예수님께서 하신 말씀으로 오늘 말씀을 마무리 합니다. “ 너희 가운데서 위대하게 되고자 하는 사람은 누구든지 너희를 섬기는 사람이 되어야 하고, 너희 가운데서 으뜸이 되고자 하는 사람은 너희의 종이 되어야 한다. 인자는 섬김을 받으러 온 것이 아니라 섬기러 왔으며, 많은 사람을 위하여 자기 목숨을 몸값으로 치러 주려고 왔다.(26-28절)."

Sermon title: <Hope for the flowers>

Do you have a goal in life? Let me ask our children here. Do you have goals in life? What kind of person do you want to be? Let’s make it simple. All of you are studying so hard. Why are you studying? Why do you read books? Many people study to get into a good university. So why do we have to go to a good university? Do you need to go to a good college to get a good job? So what's the point of having a good job? People say when you have a good job, you are more likely to make a lot of money. So what's the point of making a lot of money? To buy whatever I want?

You may say, “I want to ride a nice car. When I have a lot of money, I can buy a nice house and anything I want.” So, can you say that your goal in life is to be number one and to make millions of dollars? Of course, many good things will happen to you if you study well and be number one.

Most of all, your parents will be proud of you. Once I was walking around with a Stanford University hoodie that my friend gifted me. Someone came up to me and said, “Your parents must be proud of you.”

Now let me ask our parents here. Do you have goals for your children? Who do you want your kids to be? Many parents wish similar things for their children. “I want my child to be at the top. We want our children to grow up and become influential in the world.” We want our children to influence others by achieving high social status and accumulating wealth.

Adults in the crowd, have you found a meaning and purpose in life? Surviving the competition to reach a higher position may not be that meaningful, but we certainly do not want to lose the competition either.

Zebedee's wife had two sons, James and John. She wanted her sons to become great men and hold the highest positions. But her sons didn't go to a good college. Instead, they were fishermen at the Sea of Galilee. When she heard that Jesus was going into Jerusalem after three years of ministry in Galilee, she thought that finally Jesus was going to become a king. She became very excited and decided to go to Jesus and ask, “When you become the king, could you let James and John have the next two highest positions?” This was an outright foul. The other ten disciples got furious. They started to swear and fight with each other.

Jesus intervenes here and decides to tell his disciples something important, since the disciples did not seem to understand the purpose of Jesus’ going to Jerusalem. What do you think is His purpose in entering Jerusalem? I will give you two choices.
1) To be number one and to sit in the highest place.
2) To be the last out of all people and become a servant of others.

Choice number 2 is the correct answer. This was also the purpose and meaning of Jesus' entire life. This was why Jesus came to this earth.

I will ask the parents here. If the purpose of your child's life is to fall behind others and become a servant to others, how would you feel? Jesus says, “Whoever wants to be a great man (Mega) among you must be a helper (diaconos). If anyone wants to be number one (protos) among you, he must be a servant (dulos).” Will you feel great if your children become helpers and servants of others? Deep down we might feel like it is our loss. Still we prefer our children be the head rather than the tail.

We humans get our energy from finding a meaning. Nothing makes people more depressed than doing meaningless work. Let’s say someone gives you a shovel and tells you to dig a puddle. How would you feel if that same person tells you to fill the puddle up again after you dig about two feet? Are you going to lose your temper? You might be disheartened, since digging and filling it again do not seem to make any sense!

Let’s say you study really hard and go to a good college and get a good job. But if you do not find the purpose of your life, wouldn’t that be a miserable life? In contrast, if you realize the meaning of life, your life will be more valuable than anyone’s. 

So, when do we find purpose in our lives? We are made to find this when we help and serve others. When we do things for ourselves, there may be joy, but it is difficult to feel fulfilled and satisfied. Man is a being made in the image of God. Since God is relational, we are created to find the meaning of life when we connect with other people. 

To our youngest crowd, your moms went through tough times when giving birth to you. They went through even tougher times when they were raising you. Although you didn’t follow the directions, your moms were happy raising you. They felt rewarded and found their lives’ meanings as they helped and served you. The same goes for your lives. When we help and serve others, we find our purpose in life. 

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a tiger caterpillar who was eating the leaves and living happily. One day, the caterpillar thought, “maybe life is not all about eating and growing.” Life was too boring. So he went down under the tree. And he found a strange column. It was wriggling. Looking closely, he saw that the column was a pile of caterpillars and everyone was trying to climb to the top. But the top was obscured by clouds. He did not see anything up there, but since all the other caterpillars were climbing it, he decided to climb it also. But that was not as easy as he thought. He had to step on other caterpillars to climb. It is either he steps on others or he would be stepped on. The caterpillars were not friends. They were just threats and obstacles to each other. 

This story is from the book called "Hope for the flowers." Do you think this tiger caterpillar climbed up to the top? Yes, he finally made it. But what was at the top? There was nothing. At the top, the caterpillar heard the other caterpillars talking.
“There is nothing here.”
“Quiet, you idiot. The other kids will listen. We're where they want to be. We are here.”
“Look over there, there’s another pillar over there. There are pillars all over the place.”
Listening to this, the tiger caterpillar got upset. He got ahead of others, but in the end, he didn't find any meaning. However, he found that his friend, the yellow caterpillar, who cared for and loved him, transformed into a butterfly. He decided to go down the pole. Eventually, with the help of the yellow butterfly, he became a cocoon. And as a butterfly, he discovered the meaning of life. 

This is how the yellow caterpillar described what becoming a butterfly is.
“Butterflies fly with their beautiful wings, connecting the earth and the sky. Butterflies drink the nectar from flowers and carry seeds of love from flower to flower. Without butterflies, the flowers will soon disappear from this world!” Butterflies were the ones that brought hope to the flowers.

We realize our meaning of life when we serve others. The word “servant” may make some people uncomfortable. When you're ahead of others, honestly, there seem to be a lot of good things that come with that status. We tend to compare ourselves to others and feel like we are falling behind if we do not do the things others do. At the same time, we want to be different from others in some ways. We want to have something better or go to a better university. We want to look more special by having what other people do not have. 

However, comparing our lives to others’ is foolish. Don't compare, live your life. If someone else is a little ahead of you, just let it go. Everyone's pace of life is different. There is someone who loves books, and there is someone who hates books but is born to love sports. There is no need to compare because everyone is different.

The true meaning and happiness of life cannot be obtained by comparing ourselves with others. Rather, we get this when we connect with and hold hands with others. Seeing the laughter of those who have been helped by us makes us feel truly rewarded.

As the tiger caterpillar was reborn as a butterfly, he realized the meaning of his life anew.
He had to go into a pupa and die, in order to be reborn. We also need to believe in Jesus Christ and die with Jesus. Otherwise, we can never be born again into a new person. If we do not die with Jesus and do not live with Jesus, we will lead our lives in the same way as the rest of the world does. When we are born again as children of God, we will gain different perspectives. We will be able to live freely without comparing ourselves to others. We will also learn how to be happy even at the bottom. While carrying the cross, Jesus was happy since he knew many people would find true freedom through the cross. He asks us to live a life that sets others free.

Everyone in the world can be a flower. When we approach someone, call his name and hold his hand, he becomes a flower. All of us are called to be butterflies. We are called to bring meanings to the lives of the flowers. Those who do not know Jesus yet do not know where they are going, and they only try to get ahead and trample other people. If we as butterflies connect their lives with God, they will be able to find purpose and meaning in their lives just like we do. We will close with verses Matthews 20:26-28. 
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
