제목: 작은 이의 모습으로 오시는 예수님

어린이 여러분 한국에서 5월 5일이 무슨 날인지 아세요? 5월 5일은 어린이 날입니다. 그럼 5월 8일은 무슨 날인가요? 5월 8일은 어버이날이지요. 어버이는 어머니와 아버지를 합쳐 부르는 말이예요.미국에는 어머니날과 아버지 날이 따로 있지만 한국은 한 날에 같이 기념한답니다. 5월 8일 내일 아침에 어머니 아버지에게 “낳아주시고 길러주셔서 감사합니다.” 라고 꼭 말씀드리세요. 한국에는 어린이 날이 있지만 미국에는 어린이 날이 없는데 왜 그럴까요? 아마도 미국에서는 1년 365일 전체가 어린이 날이기 때문이지 않을까요? 한국의 어린이들은 매일 학원 몇 개씩 다녀야 하고 공부에 대한 스트레스도 엄청 많은데 미국 어린이들은 덜 하잖아요. 한국 어린이들은 너무 힘들게 공부하니까 하루만이라도 푹 쉬라고 어린이 날을 만들어 준 거랍니다. 목사님이 어린이 날을 맞아서 여러분에게 기쁜 소식을 하나 알려드리고 싶어요. 그건 예수님이 하신 말씀이예요. “내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 돌이켜서 어린이들과 같이 되지 않으면, 절대로 하늘 나라에 들어가지 못할 것이다. 그러므로 누구든지 이 어린이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 하늘 나라에서는 가장 큰 사람이다. 또 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린이 하나를 영접하면, 나를 영접하는 것이다(마태복음 18:3-5)." 하나님의 나라는 어린이들과 같아야 들어갈 수 있대요. 그러니까 어린이 여러분들이 하나님 나라에 가장 잘 어울리는 사람들인 거예요. 여러분의 엄마 아빠가 하나님 나라에 들어가는 것에 대해 예수님이 조금 고민해 보실 수도 있어요. 하지만 여러분들은 언제든 하나님 나라에서 대환영이랍니다. 정말 놀라운 소식이죠?
하나님의 나라에서는 작은 사람이 가장 큰 사람이예요. 예수님이 이 땅에 살아계실 때도 항상 별 볼일 없는 사람들을 먼저 찾아가셨어요. 예수님 당시에 어린이들은 가장 무시 당하는 존재였어요. 아무도 귀하게 여기지 않았어요. 어린이들이 예수님께 오려고 하자 어른들을 “애들은 가~”하면서 쫓아 내려고 했었죠. 그러자 예수님은 “애 때리자 마!” 하시면서, 어린이들이 오는 것을 막지 말라고 하신 거예요. 왜냐면 하늘 나라에서는 가장 작은 사람이 가장 큰 사람이기 때문이죠.

어린이 날을 맞아서 목사님이 선물 하나 더 드리려고 해요. 그것은 공부를 잘하는 방법을 알려드리는 겁니다. 어린이 여러분 공부 잘하고 싶죠? 어떻게 하면 공부를 잘 할 수 있을까요? 먼저 한 가지 방법은 여러분의 부모님께 물어보세요. 여기 계신 여러분의 부모님들은 한국에서 가장 공부를 잘 하는 사람들 중에 한 명이었으니까요. 부모님에게 물어보기 싫다면 다음 방법을 잘 들어보세요. 여러분이 공부를 잘 하려면 철이 들어야 해요. 철이 드는 것이 뭡니까? 철이 든다는 것은 나만 생각하지 않는다는 말과 똑같아요. 나만 생각하는 이기적인 사람들에게 우리는 철들었다고 말하지 않아요. 다른 사람의 마음을 헤아릴 줄 알고 공감해 주는 사람들에게 우리는 철들었다고 하죠. 다른 사람의 마음을 헤아리고 공감하는 사람은 공부를 잘하게 되어 있습니다.
목사님이 대학생 시절에 다니던 교회에 한 집사님이 계셨어요. 그분은 농사를 짓는 농부였어요. 그 분에게는 자녀가 세 명이 있었어요. 세 명의 자녀 모두 한국에서 가장 들어가기 힘든 대학교에 입학했죠. 그 집사님에게 비법 좀 알려달라는 사람들이 많았어요. 그분이 제게 해 주신 말이예요. “철들면 다 알아서 합니다.” 아이들이 부모님이 힘들게 일하시면서 자기들을 키우시는 것을 어려서부터 본 거예요. 그러다 보니 이 세 자녀 모두 철이 일찍 든 거예요. 공부 잘 해서 부모님 속 썩여드리면 안 되겠다라고 어려서부터 생각한 거예요. 그러니까 엄마 아빠의 마음을 헤아리고 공감하는 능력이 어릴 때부터 있었던 거예요. 이 집사님이 밤늦게 일을 마치고 밭에서 돌아오면 아이들 세 명이 모두 책상에 앉아 공부를 하고 있었대요. 새벽 1시 넘어서까지 공부하느라 불이 꺼지지 않았대요. 부모님 힘드시니 속 썩여 드리게 하지 않으려고 알아서 잘 한 거예요. 여러분의 부모님도 한국에서 이민 오셔서 여러분들을 위해 힘들게 일하시잖아요. 그쵸? 그러면 부모님 속 상하게 해드리면 될까요 안될까요? 안되죠~ 부모님의 마음을 이해하고 공감해 주는 우리 어린이들이 되면 좋겠어요. 그런 친구들이 공부도 잘하게 되어 있습니다.
그런데요 예수님께서도 우리가 철들기를 바라셔요. 철들어서 공부 잘 하기를 바라시는 건 아니구요. 철들어서 예수님의 마음을 이해해 주시길 바라시는 거예요. 예수님의 마음 속에 있는 것을 한 마디로 표현하라면 이겁니다. 그것은 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 내 몸처럼 사랑하는 것이예요. 이 예수님의 마음을 잘 이해하고 따라하는 사람들을 볼 때 예수님은 무척 기뻐하신답니다. 그러니까 자기만 아는 사람들을 볼 때 예수님은 속상해 하세요. 하지만 내 옆에 있는 내 이웃들을 이해해주고 공감해주고 잘 돌봐주는 사람들을 예수님은 너무나 기뻐하세요. 이것을 위해 예수님이 이 땅에 오셨기 때문이죠. 예수님은 세상의 모든 사람들이 소외되지 않고 하나님의 자녀로서 사랑받으면서 살아가는 것을 원하셨어요. 하지만 세상은 온통 망가져 있었고, 악한 세력들이 그런 예수님이 만드실 하나님의 나라를 방해했어요. 예수님은 악한 세력들에 의해 망가져버린 하나님의 세계를 구하기를 원하셨어요. 모두가 서로 사랑하고 서로 돌봐주고 다 같이 잘 사는 평화의 세상을 만들기를 예수님은 바라셨어요. 그런 예수님의 마음을 이해하고 공감하고 따라가는 사람들이 철이 든 사람들입니다. 오늘 말씀은 바로 예수님의 마음을 잘 이해하고 실천한 사람들을 예수님이 칭찬하시는 내용이예요. 여섯 가지의 행동이 소개 되고 있죠. 목 마른 사람에게 물을 주고, 배고픈 사람에게 먹을 것을 주고, 벌거 벗은 사람에게 입을 것을 주고, 아픈 사람을 돌봐 주고, 나그네를 환영해 주고, 감옥에 있는 사람을 찾아가 준 것 모두 어떤 동작과 행동입니다. 예수님은 이런 행동을 한 사람들이 의로운 사람이라고 칭찬을 아끼지 않습니다.

이 말씀을 더 잘 이해하기 위해 그림을 하나 보겠습니다. 예수님이 뭘 원하시는 지 이 그림은 잘 표현하고 있습니다. 지거 쾨더 (sieger köder)라는 독일의 신부님이 그리신 그림이예요. 이 분은 그림을 통해 하나님의 말씀을 묵상하고 표현하는 것을 좋아하셨어요. 이 그림의 제목은 “Werke der Bermherzigkeit (Work of compassion)” 입니다. 본문의 성경 말씀을 그대로 표현한 그림입니다. 먼저 목이 마른 사람에게 물을 주고 있는 빨간 옷을 입은 여인이 보이시나요? 그 여인의 오른 편에는 수녀복을 입고 있는 여인이 병들어 누어 있는 환자를 돌봐주고 있죠. 그리고 열린 문 바로 안쪽에 어떤 나그네가 서 있고 한 여인이 그를 안으로 들이며 환영해 주고 있죠. 바로 그 오른 쪽 옆에는 죄수복을 입은 한 죄수를 한 남자가 감싸 안아주고 있습니다. 그리고 누군지 모르지만 빵을 쪼개어 검정 피부의 손을 가진 사람에게 빵을 나눠주고 있습니다. 검정 색 손을 가진 사람이 배고 픈 것이 분명합니다. 여섯 가지 동작 중에 한 가지 동작이 남아 있는데요. 뭐죠? 헐벗었을 때 옷을 준 것입니다. 그것은 왼쪽 맨 위에 포스터로 표현이 되어 있습니다. 독일말로 “Kleider für die dritte Welt (Clothes for the third world)”라고 되어 있는 포스터입니다. 제 삼세계란 가난한 이웃 나라를 말하구요, 그곳에 옷을 보내주자는 포스터입니다. 그리고 이 그림의 중심에는 십자가가 있습니다.
이 그림의 한 가지 특징이 있는데 발견하셨나요? 그것은 도움을 받고 있는 사람들의 얼굴이 모두 같은 사람이라는 겁니다. 바로 예수님의 얼굴이죠. 도움을 주는 사람들은 자신들이 도와주는 사람이 예수님인 줄 모르고 도와주었을 뿐이었죠. 하지만 나중에 예수님이 그들에게 말씀하십니다. “니가 도와준 목마른 사람, 배고픈 사람, 헐벗은 사람, 병든 사람, 감옥에 있는 사람, 나그네는 바로 나였다.” 예수님은 지극히 작은 자, 그러니까 보잘 것 없는 사람의 모습으로 우리 가운데 오시는 겁니다. 인생을 잘 살고 싶고, 의미 있게 살고 싶으신 분들은 잘 새겨 들으셔야 합니다. 예수님에게 공부 잘 하고 못 하고 이것은 중요한 것이 아닙니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 목적을 깨닫고, 나도 예수님처럼 지극히 작은 사람들과 함께 하는 사람이 되길 주님은 원하십니다. 자기만 아는 이기적인 사람이 아니라, 옆의 사람의 어려움에 공감해주고 반응해 주는 그런 사람을 예수님은 기뻐하세요.
20세기에 프랑스사람들이 가장 존경하는 인물을 뽑을 때 항상 아베 피에르 (Abbe Pierr)라는 신부님이 1등을 차지 했다고 합니다. 그분은 파리 근교의 죽어가는 가난한 사람들과 노숙자들을 위해 1949년부터 ‘엠마우스 운동’이라는 구제활동을 시작하신 분입니다. 성경 누가복음 24장의 엠마오 사람들이 자기도 모르는 중에 예수님께 식사 대접을 하신 것에서 시작된 아이디어였다고 합니다. 예수님께서 가난한 사람들의 모습으로, 노숙자의 모습으로 우리에게 다가 오신다고 믿고 아베 피에르는 그들을 적극적으로 돕는 일을 평생 하셨어요. 아베 피에르 신부님은 사람을 두 부류로 나눌 수 있다고 하셨어요. 본문의 양과 염소로 예수님이 나눈 것처럼 말이예요. 홀로 만족하며 살아가는 사람들과 다른 이들의 아픔에 공감하는 사람들로 나눌 수 있다고 합니다. 홀로 만족하는 사람들은 다른 사람들의 아픔과 어려움을 보고 등을 돌리는 사람입니다. 공감하는 사람들은 다른 사람의 아픔을 보고 그에게 나아가는 사람이죠. 하나님의 나라에서는 어떤 사람이 환영 받을까요? 어려움을 당하는 우리의 이웃들에게 등돌리지 않고 나아가서 손을 내밀어 주는 사람들입니다.
아까 그림에서 또 한 가지 눈에 띄는 것은 사람들의 손입니다. 손을 통해 사랑이 흘러가고 있는 것이 보이시나요? 그러고 보면 한글 성경을 보면 여섯 가지 동작의 뒤에는 모두 “준다”라는 말이 수식어처럼 붙어 있는데 손과 관련된 동작이죠. 나누는 삶입니다. 손을 통해 다른 사람을 터치해주기도 합니다. 손을 통해 다른 사람을 끌어 안아주기도 합니다. 손을 통해 필요한 것들을 전달해 주기도 합니다. 그러니까 손을 이용해 다른 사람들을 도와주는 삶이야 말로 예수님이 우리에게 바라는 삶이랍니다.

메튜 폭스라는 사람은 이 세상에 두 가지 삶의 모습이 있다고 말했어요. 하나는 사다리를 올라가는 삶이고, 다른 하나는 circle dance를 추는 삶이라고 했어요. 써클 댄스란 한국의 전통춤인 강강수월래 같은 춤이예요. 사다리를 올라가는 사람들은 가장 높은 곳에 먼저 오르기 위해 노력하는 삶을 삽니다. 나보다 앞에서 올라가는 사람들을 잡아 끌어 내려야 내가 더 높이 올라갈 수 있습니다. 그리고 내 밑에 있는 사람들은 철저히 밟아서 못 올라오게 해야 합니다. 이런 사회 속에서는 경쟁 때문에 떨어지고 상처 입은 사람들로 가득하겠죠. 그런데 써클 댄스를 추는 것은 사다리를 오르는 것과는 전혀 다른 삶입니다. 써클 댄스는 모두가 같은 위치와 레벨에서 춤을 시작합니다. 춤을 추기 위해서는 손을 내밀어 내 옆의 이웃의 손을 잡아야 합니다. 손을 잡고 즐겁게 춤을 추고 있는데 저 멀리서 누군가가 우울한 표정을 짓고 있다면 어떡해야 할까요? “그렇게 우울해 하지 말고 이리 오세요. 우리 같이 춤을 춰요” 하며 그를 원 안으로 초청하겠죠. 그러면 원은 더 커지고 즐거움도 더 커지게 되겠죠. 써클 댄스는 바로 하나님 나라의 비전입니다. 우리 다하나교회의 비전이기도 하구요.
우리 모두는 써클 댄스에 초대를 받았습니다. 옆 사람과 손을 잡고 나의 것들을 공유하며 함께 행복하고 모두가 즐거운 그런 세상을 향해 초대를 받은 겁니다. 저는 어린이 여러분이 공부는 잘하지만 공감하는 능력은 떨어지는 그런 사람이 안 됐으면 좋겠어요. 이웃의 아픔에 공감할 줄 알고 손을 내밀 수 있는 따뜻한 사람이 되었으면 좋겠어요. 우리 모두가 예수님 앞에서 철이 들면 좋겠습니다. 나중에 인생 다 살고, 예수님이 너 인생 참 잘 살았구나. 하는 그런 소리를 들었으면 좋겠습니다. 이제 우리 모두 주님의 마음을 헤아리고 학교에서 직장에서 그리고 동네에서 다른 사람들과 손잡고 하나님의 나라를 만들어가면 좋겠어요. 학교에서도 ‘어떤 친구가 외로워하나? 어떤 친구가 힘들어 하나? 어떤 친구들을 도와주어야 할까?’ 항상 신경써서 지켜 보고 도와주는 우리 어린이들 되면 좋겠어요. 교회에서도 소외된 사람들이 있지는 않은지 잘 보시고 다가가 함께 하는 다하나교회 교우들이 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 예수님은 낯선 이의 모습으로, 지극히 작은 이의 모습으로 지금도 우리에게 다가오십니다. 언제든 이웃에게 따뜻한 손 내밀어 주는 우리 모두가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

Children, do you know what day May 5th is in Korea? May 5th is Children's Day. Then What about May 8th? May 8th is Parents' Day. Parents’ Day is a combination of Mother’s and Father’s Day. In the United States, Mother's Day and Father's Day are separate, but in Korea, they celebrate them together on the same day. Parents’ Day is a day to celebrate our moms and dads, and to tell them that we love and cherish them very much. There is Children's Day in Korea, but there is no Children's Day in the United States. Why is that? Maybe it's because every day is Children's Day in the United States! Many children in Korea go to several private extra-curricular academies after school every day. They are under a lot of stress and going through constant competitions, but children in the States are less stressed about studying. Because Korean children study so hard and are always stressed out about class rank, Children's Day was made so that they can rest and do not have to worry about their studies at least for a day. As a Pastor who loves Children’s Day, let me share some good news for you. This is what Jesus said. “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me (Matthew 18:3-5).” Jesus said that people who can enter the kingdom of God are like children. So, children like you can enter the kingdom of heaven. It might be more difficult for mom and dad to enter the kingdom of God, but you're always welcome. Isn't that amazing news?
In the kingdom of God, the lowliest is the greatest. Even when Jesus was alive on earth, He always went to the people the lowest position first. In the days of Jesus, no one gave any regard for the children; they were the weakest and the most neglected in society. No one thought children were worthy. When the children tried to come to Jesus, the adults tried to divert them away, saying, “Children, go away!” Then Jesus told them not to stop the children from coming. Because in the kingdom of heaven, the smallest person is the biggest person.

For Children's Day, this pastor would like to give you another present: how to study effectively. Children, do you want to study effectively? The first and best way is to ask your parents. Your parents here were some of the most educated people in Korea. If you don't want to ask your parents, listen carefully. If you want to study effectively, you need to become mature. What is maturity? Maturity is something that happens when we start thinking about others around us. Those who are not yet mature are selfish people who only think about themselves. On the other hand, people who can understand and empathize with others are mature people.
When I was in college, there was a deacon at my church, who was a farmer. He had three children. All three of his children got into the most prestigious university in Korea. Many people asked him about what his secret was on how he could send all three of his kids to the top university. This is what he said to me. He said, “Once they mature, studying comes naturally.” From an early age, his children saw their parents working hard to raise them. When these children began to give thought to how hard their parents were working to give them a better life, they realized that one of the best ways to bring joy to their parents was to study hard. In other words, they matured. As an example of this, this deacon came back late one night after working all day in the fields; however, to his surprise, he found that all three of his children were still hard at work at their desks. This was at 1 in the morning! I know that all of your parents are working just as hard here in the United States to give you all a better life – so I hope that you too will all become mature and start to understand your parents’ hearts.
In a similar way, Jesus calls us also to become mature. But this isn’t necessarily referring to the type of maturity that leads us to study hard. Rather, this maturity calls us to understand the heart of Jesus; and this heart calls us to love the Lord and love our neighbors as we love ourselves. When we start to understand Jesus’ heart and begin to follow after the example that He set for us, this brings great joy to Him, but when we forget about Jesus’ teachings and think only about ourselves, this grieves Him. Jesus calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves – understanding them, empathizing with them, and taking care of them. This was what Jesus came to this Earth to teach us. Jesus wants everyone to be called the children of God, to be loves, and to live their lives to the fullest. But the world that Jesus found when He came was broken, and filled with evil that wanted to disrupt God’s great plan for salvation. Jesus came so that we could see from His example how to love each other well. People who realize this and carry this out in their lives are mature. Today’s Scripture shows a few examples of people who did this very thing. There are six actions as examples of how we can carry out Jesus’ teachings to us. It is to give water to the thirsty, to give food to the hungry, to clothe the naked, to care for the sick, to welcome the wanderer, and to comfort those in chains. Jesus calls people who do these things righteous.

Let’s look at a picture together to better understand today’s Scripture. This is a work by a German priest by the name of Sieger Köder, and he took special joy in meditating on God’s Word and expressing this through works of art. The title of this work is “Werke der Bermherzigkeit,” which means Work of Compassion. It is a painting that directly transcribes what was written about in today’ passage. First, we see a woman in red giving water to the thirsty. To her right, we see a nun taking care of the sick. There is also an open door where there is a woman welcoming a wanderer. To their right is a prisoner being comforted. Next, we cannot see the full context, but someone is sharing bread with another of a different race, who is clearly hungry. And there is one action, or example, left from today’s scripture that is left out – which is clothing the naked. This is shown by a small poster that we see on the top left corner, which says “Kleider für die dritte Welt(Clothes to the third world)”; it’s a poster that is leading a donation drive to gather clothes to send to the third world.
But there is something special about this picture; it is that everyone who is being helped has the same face. This is the face of Jesus. Those providing the help did not know that they were offering their aid to Jesus. But Jesus states this to them – whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me. Jesus comes to us in the image of the smallest, weakest, most insignificant amongst us. Those of us who would seek to live a meaningful life, a good life, should now listen carefully. To Jesus, whether you are smart or good at studying is not important in and of itself. Rather, Jesus calls us to realize the purpose for which He came to this Earth, and for us to share in His ministry of serving the least of these around us – to not be selfish people who only care for our only successes, but to be people who are sensitive and mindful of the needs of people around us. Jesus delights in people like this.
When the French were asked to pick their “most respected person” of the 20th century, a priest by the name of Abbe Pierre took first place. He was a priest who lead a movement called Emmaus which sought to address poverty and homelessness in Paris. Father Pierre started this movement in 1949, and was inspired by the example of Jesus’ disciples unknowingly having served their Lord a meal after their trip to Emmaus, as described in Luke chapter 24. Father Pierre believed that Jesus would come to us in the image of the poor, the homeless, and the needy. He also believed that you could separate people into two groups – the so-called sheep and goats, just as Jesus separated people into these two groups in the Scriptures. One group is happy to remain self-satisfied, and are more than capable of turning their backs on the needy around them. The other group are sensitive to the needs and pain of the others around them, and so approach them with compassion. Which type of person do you think would be most welcomed in the Kingdom of God? It is those who do not turn their backs on the suffering around them, and instead reach out with their own hands.
Let us look back at the painting once again. Another thing that stands out are the hands. Can you see the flow of love and care through the moving of hands? When we look at the Korean text of today’s Scriptures, we see that there is the action of “giving,” or re-interpreted, “providing with hands,” that unites the six examples in Jesus’ teachings today. In short, it is to “share.” We reach out to others with our hands; we can provide to others with our hands; sometimes, we can embrace those grieving with our hands. In short, it is the correct use of our hands to help others that Jesus delights in.

A theologian by the name of Matthew Fox describes a dichotomy (two types) of lives in this world. One is a life that climbs upward (Jacob’s ladder) whilst another is one which shares in a “circle dance” (Sarah’s Circle). This concept of Sarah’s circle is quite akin to the “Gang-Gang-Su-Wol-Rae” of Korean tradition. Let us think about ladder-climbing first; this is a life punctuated by effort to get ahead, to get higher; you have to pull down others ahead of you to move upward, and you must push down on those below you to keep your own position. In a society like this, competition results in much pain and suffering, almost by design. But Sarah’s Circle is a different paradigm entirely; a circle dance is one in which everyone starts at the same level, and you must reach out to those around you in order to participate in the dance. There is no start or end; and you must become equal with your neighbor. This circle welcomes even those who are grieving, who are in pain, who are saddened; their joining the circle makes the circle wider, and our joy is made greater in the sharing of it. This, I believe, is one way we can understand the Kingdom of God, and a vision of our church community as well.
We have all been invited to this circle. We have been invited to share in collective joy with others around us. I hope that we would all become those of us who shun self-driven perspectives that ignore the others around us, but rather that we would seek to become more empathetic, more kind, more gentle. I pray that we would all become the type of mature believers that Jesus calls us towards, so that when He calls us home, we might be called good and faithful servants. Now let us think on the others around us, whether it be in our schools, workplaces, or neighborhoods. Let us work towards building the Kingdom of God in our own communities. Children – I pray that you would seek out those who have been left out, who have been othered, who are in need – and to provide whatever help and care you can. In the same way, I pray that we would become a community of faith that takes note of even the least of those among us. The Lord Jesus, even today, approaches us with the appearance of the “least among these.” Let us become believers who are always ready to offer a warm hand to whoever would welcome it.
