1.믿음과 순종의 여정
지난 주에 우리는 아브람의 이야기를 통해 믿음의 본질이 떠나는 것에 있음에 대해 이야기를 나눴습니다. “본토 친척 아비집”은 우리를 지탱해주는 익숙한 가치들과 사고 체계라고 했죠. 본토 친척 아비 집을 떠나 하나님의 세계에 들어옴으로 우리의 믿음의 여정은 시작되는 것입니다. 하나님이 처음 만드신 세상은 참되고(truth) 선하고(good) 아름다운(beauty) 세상이었어요. 하나님은 이 선한 세상을 자신의 형상으로 만든 인간에게 맡기며 대신 다스려 달라고 부탁하셨죠. 하나님은 그분의 나라를 인간에게 위임하신 겁니다. 그런데 아담과 하와의 불순종으로 말미암아 하나님의 계획은 틀어지기 시작했습니다. 하나님은 그런 세상을 만드신 것을 후회하기까지 하셨다고 창세기 6장에서는 말씀하세요. 얼마나 이 세상이 엉망이 되었는지 하나님의 후회를 통해 짐작해 볼 수 있습니다.
아담의 의심과 불순종으로 시작된 죄와 심판의 악순환은 역사 속에서 계속 반복해 내려갔습니다. 이 악순환을 하나님은 끊기를 원하셨어요. 새로운 선순환이 일어나기를 바라셨죠. 헝클어진 실타래를 다시 원래 모습으로 돌려 놓으려면 실마리를 찾아야 하겠죠? 인류가 하나님을 떠나고 타락하게 된 그 시작점으로 돌아가 아담과 하와가 저지른 실수와 반대 방향으로 가는 것이 필요했습니다. 바로 이 지점이 하나님께서 아브람에게 요구하시는 것이 무엇인지를 알 수 있는 부분입니다. 제가 작년에 “예배의 실패, 소명의 실패”라는 설교를 드린 적이 있습니다. 아담과 하와의 실패는 예배와 부르심의 자리에서 이탈한 것이었다는 것을 말씀드린 적이 있습니다. 왜냐면 에덴은 온 우주의 성전이었고 아담은 그곳의 제사장으로 하나님이 세우신 사람이었기 때문입니다. 그런데 이 제사장 아담이 악의 세력과 손을 잡고 하나님이 아닌 것에 예배하기 시작했습니다. 그 중심에는 자기가 있었죠. 자기가 보고 느껴지는 대로 행했습니다.
그들의 타락은 하나님의 말씀을 의심하고 순종하지 않음에서 시작했습니다. 이것을 원상태로 돌려 놓으려면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 아브람과 사래가 아담과 하와의 반대로 해야 하는 겁니다. 아담이 말씀을 믿지 않았기에 아브람은 하나님의 말씀을 믿어야 했구요. 아담은 순종하지 않았기에 아브람은 하나님의 말씀에 순종해야 했습니다. 믿음과 순종이야말로 하나님이 아브람에게 요구하시는 핵심 내용이었습니다. 아담과 하와가 자기들을 중심에 놓았기에 아브람을 부를 때 하나님 자신을 강조합니다. “내가 보여주는 땅으로 가. 내가 너를 큰 민족으로 만들어줄게. 내가 복을 배풀거야. 내가 저주할거야.” 계속해서 나, 나, 나, 나, 나, 하나님 자신을 강조합니다. 아담처럼 너 자신을 따라가지 말고 하나님을 따르라는 거죠. 하나님께서 말씀하신 약속을 믿고 그 약속을 따라가는 순종의 여정이 우리들의 신앙의 여정의 핵심이라는 것을 아브람을 통해 알 수 있습니다.
2. 약속과 응답의 불연속성
아브람의 네러티브는 약속과 응답이라는 큰 틀에서 보아야 합니다. 아브람에게 하신 약속이 어떻게 성취되어가는 지의 과정과 여정을 살펴 보면 우리의 신앙이 어떠해야 함을 우리는 배우고 깨달을 수 있습니다. 아브람에게 주신 약속은 명령의 형태로 주어졌습니다. “너의 본토와 친척과 아비집을 떠나라. 너는 복이 되라”는 것은 명령이기도 했지만 약속이기도 했습니다. 이것이 얼마나 쉽지 않은 명령인지 우리는 짐작할 수 있습니다. 자기가 누리던 모든 안전한 기반을 포기하고 떠나는 것은 쉽지 않기 때문이었습니다. 생명의 위협이 있을 뿐만 아니라 의지할 수 있는 모든 것을 잃는 엄청난 상실이 전제되어 있기 때문입니다. 떠나는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 그런데 하나님의 나라는 기존 틀 위에서는 세워질 수 없고 새 판에서 시작해야 했기에 떠나야했습니다.
문제는 떠나는 약속에 순종했음에도 하나님의 약속이 곧바로 성취되지 않았다는 겁니다. 우리 믿음 생활의 딜레마가 바로 여기에 있습니다. 신앙 생활은 떠나는 것에서부터 시작되죠. 내가 믿고 따라왔던 나 중심의 가치관에서 과감히 떠나는 것에서 시작합니다. 나 중심에서 하나님 중심으로 탈출해서 떠나는 것이 신앙이 시작되는 지점입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 하나님의 약속을 신뢰함으로 새로운 가치관을 향해 과감히 옮겨 가는 것이죠. 그런데 그렇게 하나님만 믿고 떠났는데 여전히 인생에 시험이 가득하고 약속의 성취는 커녕 아무 일도 일어나지 않은 것처럼 보일 때가 많습니다. 약속과 응답 사이의 불연속성이라 할 수 있습니다. 약속을 했으면 그 약속은 반드시 실현되어야 하는데 그 약속이 응답되기까지 너무나 긴 시간이 걸리고 아무 일도 일어나지 않는다는 착각이 생긴다는 거죠.
아브람의 이야기를 하나님의 약속과 그 응답의 큰 틀로 보아야 한다고 말씀드렸는데 아브람이 정작 겪고 있는 현실을 한 번 봐보십시오. 4절 말씀은 아브람이 하나님의 약속을 믿고 진짜로 떠났다고 합니다. 그런데 혼자서 떠난 것이 아닙니다. 아내 사래는 65살 할머니고 조카 롯도 함께 떠납니다. 그리고 그의 집안에 많은 식솔(members)들이 있었습니다. 재산도 많았는데 아마도 가축떼였을 겁니다. 하란을 떠나 가나안으로 가는 것은 쉬운 결정이 아닌 것을 알아야 합니다. 아내 한 사람을 설득시키는 것만도 엄청난 에너지와 시간이 드는 것을 우리는 압니다. 저도 아내가 중국 선교에 동의하는데 7년이 걸렸습니다. 아무리 가부장 사회라지만 사래를 설득하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니었을 겁니다. 그렇게 어렵사리 가나안 땅에 도착했습니다. 그렇다면 뭔가 약속의 성취가 진행되는 것이 눈에 보여야지 않겠습니까? 그런데 6절부터 10절까지의 말씀을 보면 아브람 일행이 가나안 땅에 도착한 후 줄곧 이동한 이야기만 나오고 있습니다. 처음에 세겜 땅에 도착하였습니다. 그곳은 신령한 참나무에서 제사가 드려지는 지방의 산당(High Place, shrine)이었습니다. 그곳에는 가나안 사람들이 살고 있었다는 이야기와 아브람이 그곳에 제단을 쌓았다는 이야기를 연이어서 하는 것은 무슨 이유입니까? 가나안 사람들이 그 나무 밑에서 우상 숭배에 빠져 있었는데 아브람은 그곳에 하나님을 위해 제단을 쌓았다는 겁니다. 비교대조를 하고 있는 거죠.
7절을 읽으면서 저는 피식 웃었습니다. “내가 너의 자손에게 이 땅을 주겠다.” 엥? 지금 하나님의 약속을 따라서 그 약속이 성취되기를 바라는 아브람에게 하는 말이잖습니까? “내가 너에게 이 땅 줄게.”라고 해야 하는 거 아닌가? 물론 자손에게 이 땅을 주겠다는 것은 더 큰 약속을 상기시켜 주는 것이긴 합니다. 자손이 있어야 땅이 의미가 있는 것이니까요. 자손이 없으면 아브람에게 그 땅이 무슨 의미가 있습니까? 그런 의미로 따져 보면 “네 자손에게 이 땅 줄게”라는 말이 더 타당하긴 하죠. 문제는 다시 약속을 상기시켜 주는데도 아브람이 계속 남쪽으로 이동해 가는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 벧엘과 아이성 사이의 산악지대로 갔다가 아예 이스라엘의 최남단인 네게브까지 이동해 갔다고 성경은 말해 줍니다.
왜 이동해 갔겠습니까? 그땅에서 정착하기가 녹녹치 않았던 겁니다. 아브람 혼자가 아니라 많은 식속들과 가축들을 거닐고 이동해야 했던 아브람을 그 땅 사람들은 반길 리가 없었겠죠. 아브람은 세겜 땅에서 점점 남쪽으로 내려가 결국 헤브론(Hebron)과 브엘세바(Beersheba)가 있는 네게브까지 이른 겁니다. 이스라엘 지형을 보면 세겜 북쪽으로 므깃도 평야가 형성되어 있어 농사짓기 좋은 땅입니다. 그런데 세겜에서 남쪽으로 산악지대가 나오고 그 산악지대보다 더 남쪽으로 가면 척박한 황무지가 나옵니다. 네게브는 농사도 짓기 힘들고 가축떼를 돌보기도 힘든 그런 황량한 땅입니다. 아브람이 세겜 남쪽으로 계속 이동해 갔다는 것은 남쪽으로 밀려났다는 것을 말해 줍니다.
10절 말씀은 그것이 끝이 아니라 그 땅에 기근이 듦으로 인해 아브람 가족이 약속의 땅에서 이탈해 갔다고 이야기 합니다. 가나안 땅이 아니라 이집트 땅으로 피해갈 수 밖에 없는 처량한 나그네 신세가 아브람의 신세입니다. 아니 하나님이 약속하신 것 맞습니까? 하나님의 약속을 믿고 하나님이 보여주신 곳으로 왔는데 왜 이 모양인 겁니까? 왜 계속 이동해야 하고 왜 계속 삶은 지쳐만 가고 불투명해지기만 하는 겁니까?
3. 불투명한 삶, 그리고 신비
아브람은 아이를 낳을 수 없는 저주받은 자신을 부르신 하나님을 믿기로 하였습니다. 하나님을 따르기로 선택한 것이죠. 생물학적인 관점에서 자기에게서 큰 민족이 나올 확률이 0%지만 하나님의 말씀을 믿기로 합니다. 자신을 통해 큰 민족이 탄생하고 그 민족이 가나안 땅을 차지하게 되고 세계 모든 민족의 본이 된다는 그 높은 뜻을 따르기로 선택한 것입니다. 그럼에도 그의 삶은 여전히 안갯 속입니다. 불투명하기만 한 그 길을 계속 걸어야 하는 아브람의 심정은 어떨까요?
방을 정리 어지럽히는 것이 어렵습니까 아니면 치우고 정리하는 것은 어렵습니까? 아담의 길을 따르기는 어렵지 않습니다. 어떤 죄든 한 번 짓기 전에 갈등하고 고뇌하고 몸부림 칠지 모르지만 일단 한 번 선을 넘기만 하면 그 다음부터 그 죄는 쉬워지게 되어 있습니다. “바늘 도둑이 되는 건 어려울지 모르지만 바늘 도둑이 소 도둑 되는 것은 어렵지 않습니다.” 반대로 아브람의 길을 따르는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 아담이 망가뜨려 놓은 길을 다시 되돌려 놓기 위해서는 수고스럽고 긴 싸움이 필요하기 때문입니다. 어떤 면에서 하나님의 뜻을 따르고 그리스도인이 된다는 것은 수고스러운 일입니다. 은혜라는 연료가 없이는 애당초 움직일 수 없는 길입니다. 성령의 감동이 없이는 도저히 시작되지 못할 기적이 바로 하나님의 약속을 따라가는 믿음의 삶입니다.
저도 20년을 계획하고 준비한 중국 선교사의 삶이 4년만에 추방으로 마무리 되는 것을 보면서 적잖게 당황했습니다. 아니 황당했습니다. 내가 하나님을 따라 온 것이 맞는 걸까라는 그런 의심이 생기더라구요. 이거 내가 좋아하는 것을 따라 내가 그려온 나의 비전은 아니었을까라는 생각도 들더군요. 분명히 20년 넘는 시간 동안 검증의 과정을 거치고 여러 기적들을 맛보며 선택해 온 여정이었는데도 그런 의심이 들더라구요. 종잡을 수 없는 방황이 시작될 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 이 여정 가운데 하나님의 뜻이 있을 거라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다.
나중에 돌아보니 하나님의 구체적인 인도하심이 있었더라구요. 중국에서 추방 되기 전에 하나님은 1년 동안 중국 사람들이 아니라 한인교회를 섬기게 하셨습니다. 그리고 그 한인 교회를 하면서 생기게 된 질문들을 해결하기 위해 풀러 신학교 온라인에 등록해 놓았는데 추방 후 한 주만에 합격 통지서가 날아오더라구요. 그 계기로 추방과 함께 미국에 건너올지 누가 알았겠습니까? 어떤 영화 대사처럼 “아~ 하나님에게는 계획이 다 있었구나.”라는 고백을 하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 그때 불투명한 인생인데 정말 신비로 가득한 인생이구나 라는 생각을 하게 됐습니다.
우리 삶이 오늘 내일만 불투명한 것이 아닙니다. 인생 자체가 불투명한 것입니다. 믿음의 여정은 불투명합니다. 하나님의 약속을 믿고 따라가는 삶 자체가 불투명한 삶을 선택하는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 하나님만 의지하고 하나님의 음성을 분별하며 그분을 따라가야 하는 것이구요. 히브리서 11장은 이런 믿음의 삶을 살았던 사람들의 삶을 우리에게 소개해 주는 유명한 장이죠. 거기서 아브람의 삶을 이렇게 평가합니다. 히브리서 11장 8-9절 말씀입니다. “8 믿음으로 아브라함은, 부르심을 받았을 때에 순종하고, 장차 자기 몫으로 받을 땅을 향해 나갔습니다. 그런데 그는 어디로 가는지를 알지 못했지만, 떠난 것입니다. 9 믿음으로 그는, 약속하신 땅에서 타국에 몸 붙여 사는 나그네처럼 거류하였으며, 같은 약속을 함께 물려받을 이삭과 야곱과 함께 장막에서 살았습니다. “
아브라함의 인생이 한 마디로 “장막 인생, 텐트 인생”이었다고 합니다. 약속하신 땅에 갔는데 타국에 몸 붙여 사는 나그네처럼 이리 저리 떠돌아 다녔다. 이리 저리 떠돌아 다니는 유목민들을 상징하는 것이 바로 텐트죠. 39절 말씀입니다. “이 사람들은 모두 믿음으로 말미암아 훌륭한 사람이라는 평판은 받았지만, 약속된 것을 받지는 못하였습니다.”
약속의 땅 가나안 땅에 도착했는데도 “야 여기가 아닌가봐~ 딴 데로 가자.” 베델과 아이 사이에 텐트를 쳤는데도 가나안 사람들에게 밀려 계속 남쪽으로 내려가는 서러움을 견뎌내야 했습니다. 그런데 그 방랑처럼 보이는 불투명 속에서 하나님의 신비를 발견하게 됩니다. 약속된 것을 받지 못하는 약속의 지연과 유보를 믿음의 선진들이 경험했다는 겁니다. 이 것은 우리 삶에도 시사하는 바는 믿음이라는 여정이 본디 그렇다는 겁니다. 뻔하다면 절대 신비롭지 못할 것입니다. 불투명하기에 우리 삶에 신비로운 일이 일어날 때 감격하게 되는 것입니다.
4. 선물을 갖고 계시는 분을 향한 신뢰
그런데 본문 가운데서 주목해 보아야 하는 내용은 아브람이 가는 곳마다 제단을 쌓은 것과 하나님의 이름을 불렀다는 겁니다. 하나님의 이름을 부른다는 것은 무슨 뜻일까요? 부르다는 히브리 동사 ‘카라’는 큰 소리로 외쳐 부르는 동작을 의미합니다.
“하나님 듣고 있습니까? 내가 이 길을 제대로 가고 있긴 한 겁니까? 대답해 보세요.” 아브람은 간절히 하나님을 찾고 찾은 겁니다. 그리고 제단을 쌓은 것은 아담이 에덴에서 실패했던 그 행위였습니다. 제사장은 사람들과 하나님 사이에 다리를 만드는 사람들입니다. 모든 민족과 하나님을 연결할 다리 역할을 위해 아브람은 제단을 쌓고 하나님을 예배한 겁니다. 예배는 정체성입니다. 우리가 하나님을 예배한다는 것은 하나님의 제사장이라는 정체성을 확인하는 행위입니다. 아브람은 약속의 땅에 왔는데도 여전히 불안정하고 불투명한 자신의 삶 한가운데에 제단을 쌓았습니다. 하나님의 이름을 부르기로 한 것입니다. 예배는 그의 삶에 드리운 안개를 거둬내기 위한 몸부림이었던 겁니다.
지금은 자신의 손바닥 안에 없는 선물 목록들만 잔뜩 받아 들고 떠나 온 아브람은 그 선물을 줄 수 있고 주겠다고 약속한 당사자를 부르고 있는 겁니다. 하나님을 부른다는 것은 선물을 주실 분을 기억하는 행위입니다. 그러면서 선물을 주실 분을 압박하는 거죠. 아이들이 그러잖아요. 생일이 반 년 넘게 남았는데 그때부터 엄마 아빠를 압박합니다. “내 생일 때 이거 이거 사줘야 해요. 엄마 아빠 알지?” 이 아이들은 선물이 누구로부터 오는 지 압니다. 아직 자기 손에 선물이 들어와 있진 않지만 그 약속을 계속 상기시키는 겁니다. 불투명하고 불안정한 삶 가운데 우리가 취할 태도가 바로 이것입니다. 선물을 약속하신 하나님을 기억하고 그분의 이름을 부르는 겁니다.
5. 새로운 하나님 나라의 백성이 된다는 것
여러분 중에 미국 시티즌십을 따신 분들이 계실 겁니다. 여러분이 대한민국 국민이었다가 미국 국민이 되기까지의 과정을 생각해 보십시오. 쉽지 않으셨을 겁니다. 적잖은 시간이 필요하구요 적잖은 문화충격을 극복하고 문화적응의 노력이 필요하셨을 겁니다. 여러분들 안에 한국 사람으로 가지고 계셨던 문화나 습관들이 있으시겠지만 그러나 미국화된 문화와 습관에 이제 익숙해 지셨습니다.
하나님과 함께 하나님의 나라를 만들어가는 것은 이것보다 더 긴 시간과 노력이 필요할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 뜻에 순종하기 위해 끊임 없이 나를 쳐서 복종하는 노력이 필요하기 때문입니다. 기독교인이 된다는 것, 그리스도의 제자가 되어 그리스도를 따라간다는 것은 그만큼 지난한(difficult) 여정입니다. 믿음은 일회적인 사건이 아닙니다. 예수를 영접하여 하나님의 자녀로 받아들여졌음을 믿는다면, 계속해서 하나님 나라의 시민으로 우리를 적응시켜 가는 기나긴 여정이 필요합니다. 아브람의 믿음의 여정은 바로 그것을 말해 주는 겁니다. 하나님의 약속을 받고 하나님의 백성이 되었다고 끝이 아니라 그것은 시작에 불과하다는 것을 말해 주는 거죠. 그런 면에서 믿음은 점이 아니라 선이자 면입니다.
칼뱅은 이 믿음의 여정을 이렇게 말한 적 있습니다. “눈을 감고 떠나라…너희 나라를 포기할 때까지 온전히 너희를 나에게 맡기라” 하나님께서 선물을 잔뜩 쥐고 계십니다. 그 선물은 나를 위한 선물인 줄 알았더니 내 손을 통해 다른 이들에게 전해져야 하는 선물이었습니다. 그럼에도 우리는 그 선물이 우리를 통해 다른 이들에게 전해지는 그 기쁨이 얼마나 큰 줄 알기에 하나님의 약속을 붙들며 가고 있습니다. 부디 그 약속을 붙들며 가는 길이 험하고 고되고 지칠지라도 포기하지 마십시오. 계속 견지(유지)하십시오. 그리고 그 믿음의 삶을 견지하게(유지)해주는 힘은 선물을 쥐고 계신 하나님을 붙드는 길 밖에 없습니다. 하나님을 만나기 위해 부르짖고 하나님을 만나기 위해 예배하는 것입니다.
여러분의 삶에 갑작스레 찾아오는 불협화음들이 많아지고 혼란스런 상황에 처하시더라도 당황하지 마십시오. 믿음의 선배들이 이미 거쳐 왔던 과정입니다. 아브람은 계속 장막을 이동하면서 하나님께 순종하는 법을 배웠습니다. 많은 이동을 경험하신 분들은 이것이 얼마나 어려운 것인지 잘 아실 겁니다. 저도 결혼 후에 9번의 이사를 했습니다. 그 중에 1000Km 이상을 이동하여 이사를 한 것은 다섯 번이었습니다. 이동할 때마다 고백하는 것이 무엇인 줄 아십니까? ‘내 인생의 주도권은 하나님 당신에게 있습니다. 내가 어딜 가든 당신이 나의 주인이시고 내 인생은 당신의 손 안에 있습니다.’라는 고백입니다. 하나님을 따라가는 불투명한 삶을 즐기십시오. 하나님께 여러분의 인생을 맡겨드리는 것을 두려워 하지 마십시오. 그 모든 여정이 끝나면 선물 꾸러미들로 여러분의 텐드가 가득 채워질 것이기 때문입니다. 정착한 것 같지만 진짜 정착한 건지 의구심이 드시는 분들이 여기에는 상당히 많으실 겁니다. 그러한 불투명한 인생 한 가운데서 하나님을 부르시고 하나님을 예배하고 하나님을 찾으시는 여러분이 되셨으면 좋겠습니다. 그리고 그 여정을 통해 선물을 주시고 우리 삶에 복을 주시기 원하시는 하나님의 마음을 깊이 알아가는 여러분의 삶이 되시길 축복합니다.

1. The Journey of Faith and Obedience
Last week we talked about the essence of faith in letting go, through the story of Abram. “Mainland relatives and father’s house” are typical values and thought systems that support us. Our journey of faith begins when we leave our native land, our relatives, and our father's house, and enter the world of God. In the beginning, God made the world a true, good, and beautiful one. God entrusted this good world to humans made in his image and asked them to rule it instead. God has entrusted his kingdom to man. However, because of Adam and Eve's disobedience, God's plan began to go awry. Genesis 6 tells us that God even regretted creating such a world. You can guess how messed up this world is through God's regret.
The history of rebellion that began with Adam's doubt and disobedience continued to repeat itself. God wanted to break this vicious cycle. He hoped that a new virtuous cycle would take place. To untangle a ball of thread back to its original form, you must find the thread head, right? It was necessary to go back to the starting point, where mankind fell away from God, and go in the opposite direction to the mistake Adam and Eve made. This is the part where we can know what God requires of Abram. Last year, I gave a sermon titled “Failure of Worship, Failure of Call”. I have said that Adam and Eve's failure was deviating from the position of worship and calling. This is because Eden was the temple of the entire universe and Adam was the person God established as the priest there. However, Adam, the priest, joined hands with the forces of evil and began to worship things that were not God. At the center was himself. He did what he saw and felt.
Their fall began from doubting and disobeying the Word of God. How can I get this back to its original state? Abram and Sarai had to do the opposite of Adam and Eve. Since Adam did not believe the Word, Abram had to believe the Word of God. Adam did not obey, so Abram had to obey the word of God. Faith and obedience were the core content that God required of Abram. Because Adam and Eve put themselves at the center, God emphasizes Himself when calling Abram. “Go to the land I show you. I will make you a great nation. I'll make a fortune. I will curse.” Continue to emphasize me, me, me, me, me, God Himself. Like Adam, do not follow yourself, but follow God. Through Abram, we can see that the core of our journey of faith is the journey of obedience, believing in the promises God has spoken and following those promises.
2. Discontinuity between promise and response
Abram's narrative must be viewed in the broad framework of promise and response. We can learn and realize what our faith should be by looking at the process and journey of how the promise to Abram was being fulfilled. The promise to Abram was given in the form of a command. “Leave your country, your relatives, and your father’s house. “Be a blessing” was both a command and a promise. We can only guess how difficult it is to follow such a command. It was not easy for him to give up and leave all the safe grounds he pleased. This is because not only is there a threat to life, but it is premised on the consequence of losing everything you could depend on. It's not easy to leave. However, the Kingdom of God could not be built on the existing framework and had to start from a new one, so they had to leave.
The problem is that even though they obeyed the promise to leave, God's promise was not immediately fulfilled. The dilemma of our faith life is right here. A life of faith begins with leaving. It starts with boldly leaving the self-centered values that I believed in and followed. The point where faith begins is the transition point from self-centered to God-centered. By believing in God's Word and trusting in God's promises, we boldly move toward new values. However, there are many times when life is still full of tests and it seems like nothing has happened, let alone the fulfillment of the promise. You could call it the discontinuity between promise and response. This is an illusion that nothing is happening even when God gave us a promise and you realize that it will be fulfilled, but it takes too long for the promise to be answered.
I said that we should look at Abram's story as a frame of God's promise and its response, but take a look at the reality that Abram is actually experiencing. Verse 4 says that Abram believed God's promise and left. But he didn't leave alone. His wife, Sarai, a 65-year-old grandmother, and their nephew Lot also left with Abram. And there were many members in his family. Because he was a wealthy man, they probably had a herd of cattle. You should know that leaving Haran and going to Canaan is not an easy decision. We know that just convincing your wife can take a lot of energy and time. It took me 7 years for my wife to agree to go to be a missionary in China. Even in a patriarchal society, it would not have been easy to convince Sarai. After a long difficult journey, they finally arrive at the land of Canaan. Since they have obeyed and arrived, one would expect to see some kind of fulfillment in the promise of God. However, if you look at verses 6 through 10, the bible tells us only the story of their journey and moving from place to place, not anything about promises. At first, they arrived in the land of Shechem. People there had a local high place (shrine) where sacrifices were offered at the sacred oak tree. Why is it that the Canaanites lived there and that Abram built an altar there? The Canaanites were in idolatry under that tree, and Abram built an altar to worship God. The Bible is making a comparison.
As I read verse 7, I chuckled. “I will give this land to your offspring.” Eh? God is talking to Abram who left everything and obeyed to receive the promises of God. Shouldn't it be "I'll give you this land"? Of course, giving this land to his descendants is a reminder of a greater promise. The land has meaning only when there are descendants. What would the land mean to Abram if he had no offspring? In that sense, “I will give this land to your offspring” makes more sense. Despite the recent reminder of God’s promise, we do not see anything but the continuous migration of Abram and his companions. The Bible tells us that they went to the mountainous area between Bethel and Ai, and then moved all the way to the Negev, the southernmost point of Israel.
Why did they move? Because it was not easy to settle in the land. The people of the land couldn't have welcomed Abram, who had to walk and move around with many food and livestock, using the land’s resources and space. From the land of Shechem, Abram gradually went south and eventually reached the Negev where Hebron and Beersheba are. Looking at the terrain of Israel, the plains of Megiddo are formed to the north of Shechem, making it a good land for farming. However, a mountainous area emerges south of Shechem, and a barren wasteland emerges further south of the mountainous area. The Negev is such a barren land that it is difficult to farm and take care of livestock. The fact that Abram continued to move south of Shechem tells us that he was pushed south.
Verse 10 tells us that that was not the end, but that Abram's family departed from the promised land due to a famine in the land. Abram's life became that of a miserable stranger who has no choice but to escape to the land of Egypt, not the land of Canaan. Is this what God promised? Abram believed in God's promise and came to the place God showed him. Then, why is it like this? Why does Abram’s life keep getting exhausting and unclear?
3. An unclear life and mystery
Abram decided to believe in God who called him. He was unable to bear children. However, He chose to follow God. He chooses to believe God's Word, even though from a biological point of view he has a 0% chance of a great nation coming out of him. He chose to follow God’s promise and will that a great nation would be born through him, that nation would occupy the land of Canaan, and become an example for all nations in the world. Even so, his life is still in a fog. What about Abram's feelings as he has to continue walking down the unclear path?
Is it more difficult to clutter up your room or to clean and organize it? It is not difficult to follow Adam's path. You may struggle, agonize, and struggle before committing any sin, but once you cross the line, that sin becomes easy from then on. “It may be difficult to become a needle thief, but it is not difficult for a needle thief to become a cow thief.” Conversely, following Abram's path is not an easy task. It is because it takes a long and laborious battle to restore the path Adam destroyed. In a way, following God's will and being a Christian is hard work. It is a path you can’t go down in the first place without the fuel of grace. A miracle that cannot begin without the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is a life of faith that follows God's promises.
I was quite taken aback when I saw that my life as a missionary in China, which I planned and prepared for 20 years, ended in expulsion after only 4 years. It almost felt like a joke. I began to doubt whether it was right that I had followed God. I also thought that this might not be my vision, that maybe I have drawn the path based on my preferences. It was definitely a journey that I had chosen through the process of verification for over 20 years and tasted many miracles of God, but I had such doubts. A wild wandering could have begun. However, in the midst of this journey, I came to think that there must be God's will.
Looking back later, I realized that there was specific guidance from God. Before I was expelled from China, God made me serve the Korean church, not the Chinese, for a year. And to solve the questions that arose while attending the Korean church, I registered online at Fuller Theological Seminary. Who would have known that I would come to the United States after a recent deportation from another foreign country? Like a line from a movie, I couldn't help confessing, "Oh, God had a plan." At that time, I came to think that it is an unclear life, but it is really a life full of mysteries.
Our lives are not only unclear today and tomorrow. Life itself is unclear. The journey of faith is unclear. The life itself that believes in and follows God's promises is choosing an unclear life. That is why we must rely only on God, discern God's voice, and follow Him. Hebrews 11 is a famous chapter that introduces us to the lives of those who lived such a life of faith. There, the life of Abram is evaluated like this. This is Hebrews 11:8-9. “8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. “
It is said that Abraham's life was, in one word, “a life in a tent.” He went to the promised land but wandered here and there like a stranger living in a foreign country. A tent symbolizes nomadic people wandering here and there. This is verse 39. “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.”
Even after arriving in Canaan, the land of promise, he had to move somewhere else. Even though he pitched a tent between Bethel and Ai, he had to endure the sorrow of being pushed southward by the Canaanites. However, you will discover the mystery of God in the unclarities. It is said that the forefathers of faith experienced the delay and reservation of the promise of not receiving what was promised. What this also implies in our lives is that the journey of faith is inherently like that. If it is obvious, it will never be mysterious. Because it is unclear, we are thrilled when something mysterious happens in our lives.
4. Trusting in the Gift Holder
However, what we should pay attention to in the text is that Abram built altars wherever he went and called on the name of God. What does it mean to call on God's name? The Hebrew verb to call, ‘Kara’, means the action of calling out loud.
“God, are you listening? Am I on the right track? Please answer.” Abram desperately sought and found God. And building an altar was the act that Adam failed in Eden. Priests are those who build bridges between people and God. Abram built an altar and worshiped God in order to serve as a bridge to connect all nations with God. Worship is identity. Worshiping God is an act of confirming our identity as God's priests. Having come to his promised land, Abram has built an altar in the midst of his still unstable and uncertain life. He decided to call on the name of God. Worship was a struggle to reap the fog in his life.
Abram, who has left with a list of presents that are not yet in the palm of his hand, is calling to the one who can and promise to give them to him. Calling on God is an act of remembering the Giver of gifts, and putting pressure on God to give the gift. Children are like that. Their birthdays are over half a year away and yet they start to put the mom and dad under pressure. “I want this and that for my birthday, okay?” These kids know where gifts come from. They don’t have it yet, but they continue to remind them of it. This is the attitude we need to take in the midst of an unclear and unstable life. It is remembering God who promised gifts and calling on His name.
5. Being a People of the New Kingdom of God
Some of you have obtained US citizenship. Think about the process from being a citizen of the Republic of Korea to become a citizen of the United States. It wouldn't have been easy. It probably took quite a bit of time, and it would have taken a lot of effort to overcome cultural differences and adapt. You may have some of the cultures and habits that you had as Koreans, but you are now accustomed to the Americanized culture and habits.
Building God's kingdom with God may require longer time and effort than this. It is because it requires an effort to constantly self-discipline in order to obey God's will. Being a Christian, being a disciple of Christ, and following Christ is a difficult journey. Faith is not a one-time event. If we believe that by accepting Jesus we have been accepted as children of God, we need a long journey to continue transforming us into citizens of God's kingdom. Abram's journey of faith tells just that. It tells us that receiving God's promise and becoming God's people is not the end, but just the beginning. In that respect, faith is not a point, but a line and aspect.
Calvin once described the journey of faith like this. “Close your eyes and leave… Entrust you completely to me until you give up your country.” God holds a bunch of gifts. I thought it was a gift for myself, but it was a gift that had to be passed on to others through my own hands. Nevertheless, we hold on to God's promise because we know how great the joy is when that gift is passed on to others through us. Please hold on to that promise and do not give up even if the road is rough, arduous, and exhausting. Continue to persevere. And remember that the only way to sustain that life of faith is to hold on to God who holds the gift. Never cease to cry out and worship to meet God.
If you find yourself in a chaotic situation with many sudden dissonances in your life, do not panic. This is the process that our ancestors of faith have already gone through. As Abram continued to move from tent to tent, he learned to obey God. Those of you who have traveled a lot know how difficult this can be. I also moved 9 times after getting married. Five of them moved more than 1000km. Do you know what you confess every time you move? “God, you are in control of my life. Wherever I go, you are my master and my life is in your hands.” Enjoy the unclear life of following God. Don't be afraid to surrender your life to God. Because at the end of the whole journey, your tent will be full of gift packages. There are probably quite a few people here who seem to have settled but have doubts about whether or not they are really settled. In the midst of such an unclarity, I hope you will call God, worship God, and find God. And through that journey, I bless you to deeply know the heart of God who wants to give gifts and bless our lives.
